In spite of the United States’ declining economy, a group of shoppers spent about $9 million last weekend.Macy’s announced that during this year’s third annual national “Shop For A Cause” charity shopping event, they were able to increase the total raised over three years to more than $27 million.

The event was held on Saturday, September 20 in all Macy’s stores and on macys.com to help raise awareness and support for local charity organizations across the U.S.

The American Heart Association, the Go Red For Women movement and the Family Violence Prevention Fund benefited from the initiative.
