Monthly Archives: January 2009

A while ago, pieces from Victoria’s Beckham’s denim line, dvb, were hanging on racks in Debenhams.

Blogs commented in horror; the jean collection, which debuted at stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, had officially hit a rock-bottom low.

These days, Debenhams is gaining popularity…in a good way.

The UK clothing retailer has revealed that its designer sales have been boosted by the credit crunch thanks to a new type of shopper: the recessionista.

According to a statement released by the store, many shoppers are  feeding their fashion addiction by turning to the store’s designer equivalentswith a ‘chic enomic’ price tag.

The retailer reported double digit sales growth across its Designer at Debenhams offer in the run up to Christmas.

They say they’ve also seen sales and profits increase and market share gains in all major clothing categories, while reducing its debt.

At least somebody’s making money!

Russell Simmons is launching a pretty interesting collection.

It’s SpongeBob SquarePants in bling!

Word on the streets is that Simmons Jewelry Co. and Nickelodeon are creating a fine-jewelry and watch line -all inspired by SpongeBob.

Apparently, it’s been 10 years since the cartoon character has been around–and this is how they’re commemorating it.

The entire retail collection will be made of enamel, gold, silver, and diamonds under Simmons’ design direction.

I hope this goes well for ya, Russell!

Every now and then, some great things happen at Howard University.

On MLK Day (You should know that it’s Jan 19), the campus will host “Refresh the World.”

It’s a symposium on education, economy, gender, hip hop and Black America.

Appearing will be fashion mogul Sean Combs, Cover Girl Queen Latifah, Spike Lee, Rev. Al Sharpton and Dr. Cornel West.

Tickets are free but limited–if you go to school in the area and only on a first-come-first-served basis at the Howard University box office.

Image :: Whitney Port Official Blog

Apparently Whitney Port had a wardrobe malfunction or two while catching some rays on Miami Beach.

Seems like some folks did not appreciate the view.

And what did Whitney do?

She simply posted an appropriately worded apology on her blog.
She didn’t come across as nonchalant .

Neither was it the usual, unbelievable publicist-manufactured mish-mash we get these days.

It was a simple,  sincere “I’m sorry.”  And we’re fine with that.

Okay so a couple photos were captured while I was in Miami that weren’t the most discreet and I’m sorry if they offended anyone but I got too caught up in the sunshine and the weather that I guess I wasn’t as cautious as I should have been.

Everyone knows the rough and tumble of the ocean mixed with a bathing suit — not the most attractive thing ever!  So sorry for the view…very embarrassing to say the least!

I guess all I can do now is laugh about it and move on!

Strangely, I’m into t-shirts these days — a serious diversion from my girly-girl trend.

Here are some I’m loving…

Remember when everyone was wearing Gap t-shirts?

Well, it looks like the fashion retailer is trying to revive the once-popular fad.

In spite of the depressed economy,  Gap’s taking a risk (a BIG risk) and opening a “color-filled t-shirt shop.”

According to a statement issued today, it’ll be near Gap’s flagship store at 54th and 5th Ave in NYC.

It’s open today through Sunday, Feb. 8. and features a full palette of tees from Gap’s upcoming spring collection.

There’s also a limited-edition tee in Mimosa, Pantone’s color of the year for 2009, which we featured earlier this month.

Kwame Jackson

If you were following  The Apprentice, you probably remember Kwame Jackson from Season 2.

In 2004, People Magazine thought he was one of the World’s 50 Most Beautiful People.

To boot, he made the 50 Hottest Bachelors list.

Now Kwame’s into fashion more than ever with Krimson by Kwame – an executive neckwear line.

It turns out his ties are on sale in department stores already.

I even got an email saying he’s looking for interns.

Check  out Krimson by Kwame.

It’s that time of year when fashion retailers reveal their spring / summer collections.

ASOS revealed its menswear line for spring and summer of 2009 to UK and international media today.

Ian Bryder, Head of Menswear Design,, shed some light on the collection.

“For our Preppy trend – which we’ve christened ‘Preppy Tec’ – we’re presenting a sharp, contemporary take on the classic American Ivy League look but with a softer, more colourful palette,” he said.

Apparently, the line is heavily influenced by the Italian Paninaro scooter gangs that influenced terrace fashions of the 80’s and 90’s.

As usual, I’m tracking red carpet looks this awards season.

Here are a few looks, which I found interesting – for one reason or another.
