Remember when everyone was wearing Gap t-shirts?

Well, it looks like the fashion retailer is trying to revive the once-popular fad.

In spite of the depressed economy,  Gap’s taking a risk (a BIG risk) and opening a “color-filled t-shirt shop.”

According to a statement issued today, it’ll be near Gap’s flagship store at 54th and 5th Ave in NYC.

It’s open today through Sunday, Feb. 8. and features a full palette of tees from Gap’s upcoming spring collection.

There’s also a limited-edition tee in Mimosa, Pantone’s color of the year for 2009, which we featured earlier this month.

Some of the big players in the fashion retail industry are getting screwed by the recession.

  • Nordstrom reported that holiday sales dipped 8.0 percent compared to last year.
  • Neiman Marcus is reporting decreases of 31.2 percent in the five-week holiday period compared to 2008.
  • Macy’s, Inc. reported a 4.7 percent drop for this holiday season compared with the five weeks ended Jan. 5, 2008.
  • Gap Inc. reported a 12 percent decrease compared with last year.

But get this.

American Apparel reported that for the month of December 2008, sales for stores open for more than twelve months increased 3% over the year ago period, “on a constant currency basis.”

For the month of December 2007, comparable store sales increased 37%. There were 162 stores in the sales comparison for December 2008.

Makes you go hmmm…

Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani are officially the top two most powerful people in men’s fashion and retail.

That’s according to DNR’s 100 most powerful people in fashion list.

Other winners included J. Crew’s Mickey Drexler, Donatella Versace and DKI’s Mark Weber.

However, losing ground were A&F’s Michael Jeffries and Gap’s Glenn Murphy. 

Hugo Boss’ Bruno Sälzer has completely disappeared from the top 100 list, while Karen Murray of Nautica has made a comeback.

With sharp declines in its financial performance, Gap is innovating.

The retail clothing chain has tapped a diverse group of actors and style makers to launch its fall collection.

It’s the first full collection designed by Gap head designer Patrick Robinson.

The campaign, launching this week, features a whole lot of prominent folk.

Liv Tyler, Ginnifer Goodwin, Hugh Dancy, Edgar Ramirez, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Melvil Poupaud, Clemence Poesy, Nate Parker, Joe Anderson, Georgina Chapman, Julia Restoin Roitfeld, Scott Schuman, Leigh Lezark, Sean Avery, David Benioff, Max Lugavere & Jason Silva, Cecilia Dean and Ryan McGinley.

The campaign includes black and white images shot by acclaimed fashion photographer Mikael Jansson.

It features pieces from Gap’s fall collection worn in unique ways by each individual.

Liv Tyler relaxes in the boyfriend cardigan, Scott Schuman (photographer and blogger for The Sartorialist) accessorizes the oxford shirt, and actor Clemence Poesy tops off the new low rise bell jean with a tailored wool blazer.

Gap.com has appointed white as summer’s primary color.

And I have to agree.
